Website Terminology

April 28, 2021 by Sara Crosby

Content: This is geek speak for anything that exists within a website such as images, videos and text (also known as the meat of a website)

Homepage: The first thing everyone sees when they arrive at a website, it is truly the “home” of a website

Featured Image: A lengthier way to say main photo or image that is placed on a website in a predominant position for example, a home page

Menu: No, you do not order food from this. A menu in geek speak is how users navigate organized information on a website

Navigate: While this is a familiar word to most, in geek land this word means you are moving from one page, section or view to another within a website

Drop-down Menu: This is where geeks get fancy; this is a list of items that is hidden until you click on it and then allows for the user to navigate the website or fill out portions of a form

Widget: A fun computing word used for tools or content that are grouped together and can be moved or arranged on a website as desired

Sidebar: Not to be confused with what lawyers do in courtroom dramas, this word in computing land means images, text or videos that are on the left or right side of a website

Footer: A bit like it sounds in the sense that feet are usually at the bottom of something, this use of footer means content or images that are on the bottom of a website (the feet of computing land!)

Button: A bit like those real life buttons we all push to make something go.. this is a virtual version of a box that is created to allow someone to click on it and execute an action

Full-Width and Panel Page Templates: Okay, lets be honest these terms are quite a mouth full but their definition is much easier; these are terms used to describe how a website’s homepage content and images will be displayed

Post Slider: These are not virtual versions of tiny hamburgers, instead is a term for a quick view into a post by showing the title, a  photo, or short description of the post on a homepage with a button that navigates someone directly to that post

Sticky Post: A geek for a virtual post it note! This term means that a post can be selected to remain at the top of a website homepage until another sticky post is selected to take its place

Content Creation

April 28, 2021 by Sara Crosby

What is content creation (or content writing)?

First, the language of content creation and content writing are interchangeable depending on who you ask. For Dwellgood contention creation IS content writing. Content writing is the creation of written materials and media for varying types of websites. A content writer is sought out by business owners who are unable or unwilling to provide the written portion of their websites. Instead of leaving an important portion of their websites blank, they will often hire content writers. Content writers adhere to the subject, project, styling and content requirements set by those they are hired by. Content writers are rarely cited for their work to ensure the anonymity and professionalism of those that they are hired by.

Examples of content that our writer can create for you are:

  • Daily, weekly, monthly or bi-monthly blog posts
  • Article creation for newsletters or email subscribers
  • Written marketing materials for flyers/brochures/mailings
  • Editing and drafting for about us sections on websites
  • Script writing and editing for videos or podcasts
  • Social media editing and creation for platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat
  • Editing content that has already been created for a website to ensure accuracy and flow of content
